the Big About

The full 'artist statement', explaining in more depth the motivations and purpose of my work

My work explores the relationship between wearer and jewellery through incorporation of secret compartments and containment. An antiquarian outlook on personal objects is what drives my desire to discuss the ways in which people attach metaphysical meaning to inanimate objects.

Sentimentalism is the underlying principle within the collection, and the physical appearance of each piece denotes a sense of history. The marks left by the passing of time are what make pieces unique, and so my works creates opportunity for the individual history to begin. The pieces have within them hidden compartments, which allow the wearer to create their own narrative based on what they decide to secrete.

Aesthetic inspiration is derived from classical and antique furniture, and the work itself is hand-fabricated in sterling silver. Interaction and playfulness are vital aspects of my work, in an effort to encourage positive attachment and personalisation of the pieces.

In the same way that photographs become visual maps of family history, I endeavour to create a generation spanning experience, whereby the pieces act as vessels for emotion and attachment, and signifiers of relationships, time and place.
